In an attempt to raise grades and test scores McCaskey East High School in Lancaster Pennsylvania has segregated black students not only by race but by gender during homeroom. The all-black homerooms are part of an experiment to determine if grouping students homogeneously for a brief period each day will help them socially and academically.

Although I don't advocate separate schools or segregated homerooms, I think we should evaluate each situation individually in order to truly understand the rationale behind instituting a particular intervention. After reading the article and viewing the video clip, I think its a wonderful experiment and hopefully the kids will gain from the findings and practically apply them to their daily lives.

In Georgia in the late 70's, under Gov. George Busby, he instituted Quality Base Education (QBE), before the implementation of QBE there were many more Black teachers in the class rooms. We often wonder why children act this way or that way, and to be candid, no one has the answer to that question in totality. Students need to identify with someone or something in order for them to have self-esteem and to have a positive out-look on life. Having predominantly Anglo teachers all day before any given child that is not of that child race is bound to affect that child negatively. It is my contention, integration has not produced the desired result that so many had hoped for. I am in agreement with any school that is bold to try any rational approach to see if we may be able to capture the interest and further development of our precious children.
