Maya Angelou, Bill Russell, and John Lewis recieve Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Obama handed out the Presidential Medals of Freedom today, one of the highest civillian awards in the United States.

The award, which is presented each year to new recipients, is the highest award in the land, about as prestigious as the Congressional Gold Medal.

Among several winners were NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, poet, singer,and actress Maya Angelou, and civil rights activist and congressman John Lewis. See their pictures of them receiving their medals below:
