Thousands of African workers were attempting to flee eastern Libya last week in fear for their lives after facing accusations of being mercenaries.
Media reports have quoted countless eyewitness accounts of African men being paid by dictator Muammar Gaddafi to put down the February 17 uprising that has brought his regime to the brink of collapse.
But the international advocacy group Human Rights Watch has told The Sun-Herald that it is yet to confirm a single case of a mercenary being used in the conflict.
