Republican plans for Pell Grant cuts in 2012

House republicans are proposing a 15 percent cut in the federal Pell grant program as they move forward to balance the federal budget

In their 2012 budget proposal, House republicans propose slashing the program to the 2008 funding level of $16.3 billion. Under the republican plan, the maximum award level would drop to by $845 to $4,015. However, President Barack Obama is requesting $41.2 billion.

The reductions to Pell Grants are among the options in a Republican proposal to avoid a shutdown of the federal government. Democratic lawmakers have spoken out against the cuts and vowed to fight them.

The Republican bill also would reduce Pell funding by $66 billion over 10 years.

Regardless of whether Pell Grants are cut this year, they could face additional cuts next year under a separate Republican budget proposal that would reduce the scholarships by at least $800.
