It's time for wealthy blacks to step up and help their own



Opinion writer Mark Russell has written a very provacative article titled "It's time for wealthy blacks to step up and help their own". While the article focuses on the community of Indianapolis I'm sure it could be told in many other communities. In a recent conversation, a colleague shared with me an astute observation from a male friend regarding the black community of Indianapolis. Her friend said, "We spend for the things we want and beg for the things we need."

His remark struck me because it reveals the frustration shared by me and many others that wealthy blacks in Indianapolis are not contributing significantly to community-based institutions that serve the black community.

I can think of at least 10 prominent and wealthy black business owners, politicians, consultants and others who have substantial incomes but do not regularly and publicly contribute to nonprofits in the community that are engaged in community-building with black youth and families.

This is a problem with African people we don't value each other it's that crab in the bucket syndrome we must learn to trust one another or we will perish as a people.
