Malcom X daughters unhappy with new biography of their father

Two of Malcolm X's daughters are unhappy that a new biography alleges their parents' marriage was strained and that their mother -- and possibly their father -- were unfaithful.

The marriage "was definitely faithful and devoted because my father was a man of impeccable integrity, and I think that most people, if they're not clear on anything, they're clear that he was moral and ethical and had impeccable character," Ilyasah Shabazz said Wednesday.
Ilyasah and Malaak Shabazz spoke to the Associated Press about "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention." Author Manning Marable, a highly respected scholar who worked for more than 20 years on the book, died last week of complications of pneumonia just before publication.

When it comes to racism let's not lump all republicans together.

Recently I posted a story about Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern making a racist remark about minorities making less because they don't work as hard. A reader of that story named Steven Rathke replied to it saying that republicans are not racist and that many making comments such as Kern's claim to represent the GOP. I don't know if Mr. Rathke is a republican or not but he makes a good point.

It's not fair to lump all republicans together. I know I would not like to be held accountable for something the New Black Panthers, Louis Farrakhan, or Jeremiah Wright may have said or done.

You can throw Flava Flav and Lil Wayne in there too.

I think most people who are republicans are good people who have a different but yet misguided political view point....LOL. Just joking people.

I don't believe most republicans are racist but it does seem that many who make insensitive remarks like Kern's are republicans.

I think if the GOP wants to change this perception they need to come out more vocally against racist comments like Kern's and emails like the one sent by Orange County Republican Marilyn Davenport. And I am talking about on a national just not local level.

To say you are against racism is not good enough. We are all judged by our actions. So to the GOP I would like to quote my fellow New Jerseyan and rapper Redman and say , " It's time for some action!."

Clyburn says compassion necessary in deficit talks

The No. 3 Democrat in the House said Tuesday he believes Congress and the White House can find a consensus on tackling the nation’s growing indebtedness as long as “a lot of compassion’’ is brought to the table.

But Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina told MSNBC that government safety-net programs like Medicare and Medicaid must not “be shredded.’’

Clyburn is the highest-ranking African-American in Congress. Progress can be achieved in deficit negotiations, he said, "if sacrifices are, in fact, shared." Clyburn also said he thinks Democrats are willing to give some on entitlement program changes so long as Republicans show a willingness to work on closing loopholes in the tax code that benefit the wealthy.

"We have got to come to grips with spending as well as revenue," he said.

Oklahoma Republican: Minorities earn less because they don't work as hard.

I'm pretty sure the GOP just wants April to end and for Donald Trump to say something else stupid. Why? So that they can take the spotlight of racist emails and comments made by Republicans at the state and local level.Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern, a Republican made some just plain stupid comeents when talking about a measure seeking to ban affirmative action programs advancing in the state.

Rep. Kern said:

Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said minorities earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative.
“We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.

10 things for birthers to believe in now

Here at AAreports our hearts go out to people who have spent two years of their lives believing in the BS that is birtherism. We feel their pain knowing that in the eyes of everyone who is even half way sane that the birther nonsense has been laid to rest. But what will birthers believe in now? I have 10 things for them to hook their conspiracy wagons to below.

1. UFO's. An always reliable source for those willing to believe anything. Besides if you are lucky maybe the aliens will get you and you will be probed. I know you are getting tingles already.

2. Big Foot This one should be great for birthers. Since birthers refuse to believe their own eyes they will never admit that what they really saw was a big ass bear.

3. College sports is about the kids and their education The great part about this nonsense is that you will have Athletic Directors and College Presidents with too many degrees to count backing your BS.

4. The Loch Ness Monster
Another old reliable here and you even get to go to Scotland to see a bunch of big tires tied together and sware you saw the monster.

5. Glenn Beck This should be self explanatory you know with the cryogenics and all.

6. Jedi Religion
Yes you can follow the ways of the Jedi and feel the force. You also get a cool robe and a light saber. Okay it's a glowing plastic stick but you are a birther. It doesn't have to be real.

7. The world will end in 2012. Hey at least you will have a more credible source than Donald Trump. The Mayans. Hey they only invented the calender they may have gotten this right.

8. NY Mets I mean if your going to believe in a losing proposition....

9. Michael Jackson & Latoya Jackson are the same person I mean have you ever seen them in the same place at the same time ? Think about it.

10. That Donald Trump and Joe Biden didn't have hair plug surgeries that went tragically wrong.
Another one that should be self explanatory

White House releases Obama birth certificate. See it here

White House Press Release

President Obama's Long Form Birth Certificate

Posted by Dan Pfeiffer on April 27, 2011 at 08:57 AM EDT

In 2008, in response to media inquiries, the President’s campaign requested his birth certificate from the state of Hawaii. The state sent the campaign the President’s birth certificate, the same legal documentation provided to all Hawaiians as proof of birth in state, and the campaign immediately posted it on the internet. That birth certificate can be seen here (PDF) .

When any citizen born in Hawaii requests their birth certificate, they receive exactly what the President received. In fact, the document posted on the campaign website is what Hawaiians use to get a driver’s license from the state and the document recognized by the Federal Government and the courts for all legal purposes. That’s because it is the birth certificate. This is not and should not be an open question.

The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country. Therefore, the President directed his counsel to review the legal authority for seeking access to the long form certificate and to request on that basis that the Hawaii State Department of Health make an exception to release a copy of his long form birth certificate. They granted that exception in part because of the tremendous volume of requests they had been getting. President Barack Obama's long form birth certificate can be seen here (PDF). Correspondence with the Hawaii State Department of Health can be seen here (PDF).

At a time of great consequence for this country – when we should be debating how we win the future, reduce our deficit, deal with high gas prices, and bring stability to the Middle East, Washington, DC, was once again distracted by a fake issue. The President’s hope is that with this step, we can move on to debating the bigger issues that matter to the American people and the future of the country.

Richie's hiring is historic as she becomes the first black woman to be in charge of a professional sports league, a distinction she doesn't take lightly.

"I do take the notion of being a role model very seriously, a role model for women, a role model for African Americans," she said. "That is, in fact, a big reason of why this opportunity is so interesting and important to me."

Richie will take over on May 16. She intends to immediately visit teams around the country to familiarize herself with the league's owners, players and even fans. The WNBA season begins June 3.

"I absolutely plan on hitting the road," she said. "I start on the 16th and my bags are already packed. A priority for me is to really get into the market, to get to a game so that I can wipe that off my record, to really meet with players, meet with owners, meet with fans, meet with sponsors, meet with the media."

US court grants new sentencing for Mumia Abu-Jamal

A federal appeals court on Tuesday ordered a new sentencing hearing for convicted police killer and death-row activist Mumia Abu-Jamal, finding for a second time that the death-penalty instructions given to the jury at his 1982 trial were potentially misleading.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals told prosecutors to conduct the new sentencing hearing for the former Black Panther within six months or agree to a life sentence. Abu-Jamal's first-degree murder conviction still stands in the fatal shooting of Officer Daniel Faulkner, who was white.

Save Troy Davis: How you can help the NAACP help him

Letter from NAACP President Ben Jealous

Innocent until proven guilty

These four words helped establish our criminal justice system. But in a nation that prides itself on our belief in liberty and justice for all, why is Troy Davis -- with an overwhelming body of evidence pointing to his innocence -- facing execution?

Twenty years ago, Troy Davis was convicted of murdering a white police officer. Since then, seven of the nine witnesses recanted their statements, new witnesses have come forward identifying another man as the murderer, and the alleged murder weapon has still not been found.

Despite these new developments, the state of Georgia is putting Davis on track to be executed -- perhaps as early as next month.

You can help save Troy Davis' life today by standing up, adding your voice to our "name wall" and asking the Georgia Parole Board to commute his sentence:

Click here to sign petition/wall Save-Troy-Davis

When the Supreme Court heard the evidence, they understood that there were many more questions to be answered. But instead of granting Troy Davis a trial where his peers could decide his fate, he was forced to face a single federal judge where the burden was on Troy to prove his innocence -- the exact opposite presumption of a jury trial.

In hopes of exonerating Troy after 10 years of imprisonment, his lawyer submitted each piece of evidence at the hearing. And each piece of evidence was rejected by the judge. Despite noting that the case against Troy was not "ironclad," he nevertheless refused to grant a new trial.

A jury trial would have made this issue moot. Reasonable doubt would have freed Troy Davis.

Now it's up to you to put a stop to Troy Davis' execution. You are his last hope, and time is running out. Tell the Georgia Parole Board not to execute a man with such an overwhelming body of evidence pointing to his innocence:

Click here to sign petition/wall Save-Troy-Davis

As an American, I have faith in our justice system. But as President of the NAACP, I have seen how our justice system can fail. Sometimes even when it comes to life and death. It is up to us to right this wrong.

This is his last chance. Stand by Troy and stand up for liberty and justice for all.

Some Obama birth records made public for years

[ SOURCE ] Lost in the renewed scrutiny into President Obama’s birth records is the fact that anyone can walk into a Hawaii vital records office, wait in line behind couples getting marriage licenses and open a baby-blue government binder containing basic information about his birth.

In this April 20, 2011 photo, the name Barack Hussain Obama II is seen highlighted in a computer generated birth index from 1960-1964 in a Hawaii State government binder held at the State Department of Health in Honolulu.

Highlighted in yellow on page 1,218 of the thick binder is the computer-generated listing for a boy named Barack Hussein Obama II born in Hawaii, surrounded by the alphabetized last names of all other children born in-state between 1960 and 1964. This is the only government birth information, called “index data,” available to the public. Read more on this by clicking the photo below:

Tyler Perry & Spike Lee need to cut the bull!@#$

Here's a recent quote from Tyler Perry concerning Spike Lee's criticism of his films.

“I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee,” Perry said, according to reports. “Spike can go straight to hell! You can print that. I am sick of him talking about me, I am sick of him saying, ‘This is a coon, this is a buffoon.’”

Right off the top I'm going to say that Tyler Perry and Spike Lee need to cut the bull!@#$ and stop publicly feuding.

I write this right before I am dragged kicking and screaming top see Tyler Perry's latest movie, Madea's Big Happy Family. I simply don't enjoy Mr. Perry's movies and cringe every time I see a black man in a dress.

That being said there is a place for his movies.

My wife and daughter have told me to get the stick out of my a@@ and realize that sometimes people just need to laugh and have a good time. Every movie featuring black actors doesn't have to be serious all the time.

And everyone must admit that Tyler Perry's knack for making money in a industry dominated by people that don't look like him is spectacular. You can hate on his movies but you can't hate on his work ethic.

Tyler with all the money and success you have don't stress yourself over what Spike says. His movies will never gross the way yours do.

And Spike come on now why are you criticizing Tyler? You have a movie in that was put in the American Film Institutes's top 100 movies list. Do The Right Thing is a classic and a great AMERICAN movie and you are stressing over a Tyler Perry movie?

Your documentary "When the Levees Broke" won three Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award. and an NAACP Image Award. Tyler Perry can only hope to match that type of artistic success.

That leads me to this questions. Why are you brothas arguing instead of working together?

Maybe Tyler could show Spike how to appeal to a wider audience and Spike could show Tyler how to become a better film maker.

What you are two are doing right now is embarrassing and falls into that" There can be only one" trap. There's room for everyone. Hell, even rappers have come to know this why don't you two?

Come on black men squash this s!@@# and work together. You are both better than that.

Body of missing student Phylicia Barnes found in Maryland

Baltimore City Police confirm a body found in the Susquehanna River near the Conowingo Dam is missing North Carolina student Phylicia Barnes.

The bodies of a man and a woman were found Wednesday, reports CBS station WJZ.

Medical examiners compared the missing North Carolina teen's dental records with one of two bodies found on the Susquehanna River Thursday, reports WJZ.

The bodies were in such bad shape that police couldn't tell what race they were, but knew one was a man and another was a woman.

Chief Medical Examiner David Fowler says that Barnes was the only missing person in the area who matches the age and gender of the body that was found. He says her dental records were the only set police submitted for comparison.

Barnes was visiting Baltimore from North Carolina when she vanished from her sister's apartment near Reisterstown Road Plaza almost four months ago during the Christmas holidays. Her 17th birthday was Jan. 12.

The case has grown cold and no clues turned up after another massive search earlier this month. Barnes' family has been praying for her safe return.

The discovery is bringing one of the largest missing persons cases in Baltimore to a close. It's still not clear how Barnes died and if the other body found is related to her death.

Obama to supporters: I understand your frustration

[ SOURCE ] Easing into his 2012 campaign, President Barack Obama is telling his supporters he understands their frustration over the compromises he's made with Republicans, while preparing them for more to come.

During a raucous fundraiser focused on young people in San Francisco Wednesday night, Obama said his supporters are not alone in their frustration.

"There are times when I've felt the same way you do. It's a big, complicated, messy democracy," he said. "We knew this wouldn't be easy."

Obama's rallying cry is that more work needs to be done in order to make the vision of America he promised a reality, and he is the only one who can see those hopes through.

"It is going to take more than a couple of years," Obama said. "It's going to take us more than one term to finish everything that we need to do."

Obama was coupling his fundraising efforts with a series of town hall meetings aimed at selling his plan for cutting deficit spending directly to a wary public.

"The deficit is real, our debt is real. We've got to do something about it. But how we do it is going to make a huge difference," Obama said during a smaller, high-dollar fundraiser Wednesday night.

I call myself African American. You got a problem with that?

In response to many of my recent post many conservatives have lamented the use of the term African-American and have used the tired old line that we are all Americans.

My initial answer to that is that we will all be Americans when all are treated as equals regardless of race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation and not before. So just calling ourselves American will be cosmetic and nothing more. If you like cosmetic changes I'll go paint a 20 year old car and sell it to you as is for $2000. No. Didn't think so.

Now after making that statement I often wonder about the people that seem to get upset at the term African-American. Are they as upset by Italian- American or Irish-American? Do they hate Columbus Day parades or have problems with Saint Patricks Day?

Just who the hell do they think they are that they get to question what someone else calls themselves? Are they that arrogant that they think that they are so much better than others that they can even tell them what to call themselves?

Look I call my self African American not to be separatist but because I take pride in my heritage. I call myself African American to honor my African ancestors that came before me.

I also take pride in my country which is why I served in the US Army and now serve as an elected member of my local school board.

I'm just as patriotic as anyone else. Now I'm not going to go to a baseball game and cry and blubber like an idiot every time I hear the National Anthem and then start chanting USA, USA, USA, at the end of the song. I take that back if Christina Aguilera sings the National Anthem I just might cry.

Really if this is an issue to you I suggest you get a hobby. Maybe model trains or crochet.

If I or other African-Americans start to call ourselves African Iraqi or African Afghani then you might have an legit issue. But as long as the "American" is there everything is good to go.

The United States is a great country. The greatest in the world. But it will never be as great as it can be until we are all treated like Americans with equality and respect by all.  All of us just calling ourselves Americans will not accomplish that.

God Bless America!

Frederick Douglass Foundation Chairman Denounces the Caricature Depicting the POTUS and His Parents as Chimps

WASHINGTON, DC. Frederick Douglass Foundation National Chairman and Vice Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, Timothy F. Johnson, stated on Tuesday, "it is never appropriate to betray the POTUS as an animal and denounced the actions of Ms. Marilyn Davenport. "

"I am sure we are more in agreement than disagreement with Ms. Davenport on a number of issues to include President Obama's recent handling of the: 1) current gas situation, 2) conflict in Libya, and 3) budget negotiations. However, by the same token, we cannot stand by and idly watch as the President Obama is depicted in an email or comic strip as a Chimp, Monkey or Ape. Furthermore, we believe actions like these only give more fuel to the liberal's fire that we are working hard to extinguish," Johnson said.

Johnson further stated "We also want to commend Orange County's GOP Chairman, Scott Baugh, for his willingness to address this issue, immediately. Regardless of how the liberal media and the race baiting individuals try to twist this incident, it is an isolated incident and does not represent the Tea Party movement or the thousands of people who are commitment to improving the lives of all Americans through limited government and re-commitment to the US Constitution."

Vitamin D May Help Reduce Heart Risk in African-Americans

Supplementation of 60,000 IU monthly improves vascular function

( SOURCE )  In recent years supplementation with Vitamin D has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people who are deficient in the vitamin. Now new research from the Georgia Prevention Institute at Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta indicates that supplementation with the "sunshine vitamin" may be particularly beneficial for overweight African-American adults, a population at increased risk for both CVD and Vitamin D deficiency.

According to Ryan A. Harris, PhD, assistant professor, the Georgia team's research suggests that Vitamin D supplementation cut the cardiovascular risk by improving the health and function of vascular endothelial cells, cells that line the inside of blood vessels. He will discuss the team's findings at the Experimental Biology 2011 meeting (EB 2011), being held April 9-13, 2011 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. The presentation is entitled "Vitamin D Improves Flow-Mediated Dilation in African American Adults."

A Population at Risk

African-Americans as a group have multiple risk factors for CVD. They are more likely than people of other races to develop type 2 diabetes, a known contributor to CVD, and when they develop high blood pressure it tends to be more severe than that of other groups. African-Americans also have a greater risk of developing Vitamin D deficiency: The pigmentation in their skin inhibits their skin cells' ability to produce Vitamin D in response to exposure to sunlight.

The Study

In the study, 45 overweight African-American adults who were separated into two groups. (Overweight participants were chosen because carrying extra weight has been linked to inflammation in blood vessels, another risk for CVD.) One group, the treatment group, received 60,000 IU of Vitamin D in a single dose every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. The second group, the placebo group, received dummy pills. Although 60,000 IU seems like a high dose, Vitamin D has a half life of approximately 3 weeks, which means that half the dose is still in the body 3 weeks after it is taken. Given the time it takes the body to clear Vitamin D, a dose of 60,000 IU equals about 2,000 IU a day.

"We could have used daily dosing, but we knew compliance would be better with monthly dosing. One dose a month is easier than taking two pills a day," says Dr. Harris. He notes that participants reported no side effects.

At the beginning of the study, the researchers used an inflatable cuff to increase blood flow in the brachial arteries of the participants' arms, then used ultrasound to measure the arteries flow-mediated dilation. Flow-mediated dilation occurs when blood vessels dilate, or open up, in response to increased blood flow, which allows the blood to flow more freely. Vascular endothelial cells play a role in blood vessel dilation; endothelial cell dysfunction is considered to be the first sign of atherosclerosis, or "hardening of the arteries." When there is endothelial dysfunction, the blood vessels do not dilate as much and the heart has to pump harder to push blood through the vessels.

After 16 weeks, the researchers measured the participants' flow-mediated dilation again and found that flow-mediated dilation had improved in the treatment group, but not in the placebo group.

"This points to a beneficial effect of Vitamin D supplementation on endothelial cell function," says Dr. Harris. He adds that this is good news for African-Americans, given their risks for CVD. "If you're deficient in Vitamin D and you take supplements, you have a good probability of increasing endothelial function and therefore decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease."

Exactly how Vitamin D works on the endothelial cells is the "million-dollar question" Dr. Harris says. "Vitamin D interacts with a lot of different systems in the body. It may decrease inflammation, which is better for endothelial function."

He added that more research is needed to discover the long-term effects of supplementation

Racist Orange County Republican Email: President Obama and His Parents Are Apes

Birther lie exposed. The constitution never mentions 2 US born parents.

After posting a story about Gov. Deval patrick calling the birther movement ridiculous I recieved many responses on Facebook. A few quoted the Consitution of the United States as saying that a US president must have two parents who are US citizens. It sounds good but the problem is that that statement is no where in the constituion, When it comes to the qualifications for president the constitution reads:

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Now I'm no Rhodes Scholar but I'm pretty sure there is no mention of two US born parents in there. So I guess the birthers have to find abother mistruth to cling to.

Don't take my word for it. You can read the constitution here: Constitution of the United States

Maybe it's time for those who cloak themselves in the US Constitution to actually read it.

Obama saves education from budget cuts. Pell Grants & Head Start untouched

Now that the dust is settling from the budget battle we are now starting to see what was and what was not cut from the remainder of the 2011 federal budget.

President Obama has made the education of our children and affordable higher education priorities in his administartion. At times this may be hard to tell with the understandable focus on the economy and two wars going on. Three depending on what you call a war.

But President Obama put his money where his mouth is and made sure that Pell Grants and Head Start Programs were untouched in this round of budget cuts.

On the White House Blog Dan Pfeiffer the White House Communications Director wrote

We protected funding for critical programs that invest in science programs, our kids’ education, and critical health programs. We are maintaining current levels of Head Start enrollment, funding Race to the Top, including an early learning element, and have sufficient savings available to maintain the Pell Grant maximum award and the broad education reform agenda, including K-12 education.

The good news for those recieving Pell Grants is that the maximum amount you can get will stay at $5550.

Kudos to President Obama for understanding that education is a top priority and that our children need us to give them the best education possible as they head out into a golbal economy.

Carl Lewis running for NJ State Senate seat

Olympian Carl Lewis who is famous for winning 9 olympic medals and infamous for his mangling of the national nnthem has announced his formal entry into the 8th Legislative District race for a seat in the NJ State Senate.

"When I run," said Lewis to laughter, "I run to win. I may not run as fast - but I learn as fast."

Our taxes are too high," said the fledgling candidate, who grew up in Burlington County but then spent most of his adult life outside the Garden State.

He told reporters that he voted in California until 2008. In 2010, he transferred his registration here, he said. He's been a property owner in Medford since 2005.

At least twice he railed against what he sees is a deepening "culture of mediocrity" in America, Lewis said, "We need to get communities back together," and expressed his commitment to education, then ducked a reporter's question about vouchers and charter schools.

"I'll give you a platform soon," he promised. "It will be a few days."

"I have community experience," he said to the inevitable question about his lack of political acumen.

"If I can deal with my mother's wrath, there's nothing I can't handle in Trenton," Lewis said.

I guess we should wish Mr. Lewis good luck and tell him to refrain from any more singing..LOL.

GOP 2012 budget motto: !@#$ the poor!

GOP 2012 budget motto: !@#$ the poor! by George Cook

You can post this in the !@#$ that happens when people don't come out and vote file. Sadly many who will be affected by these cuts did not come out to vote in 2010. Now sadly in 2011 and headed into 2012 they will feel the consequences of that decision.

As we ready for a showdown on the 2012 federal budget the over all theme the republicans have to lower the deficit is becoming quite clear. It can be summed up in three words. @#%& the poor!
