Will we ( African Americans ) help make Red Tails a hit?

UPDATE 01/14/12: since this article was first written. Boxoffice.com has changed their predictions on Red Tails prospective opening weekend and total gross. They now predict a 13 million dollar opening weekend and a 39 million total gross.

The movie Red Tails comes out January 20 and there is already worry that it wont be a successful film. Boxoffice.com predicts that Red Tails will only have a 9 million dollar opening and a 25 million dollar gross. See that here Boxoffice.com

To get the movie made George Lucas had to spend 93 million of his own money.

Lucas blamed the reception to an “all-black cast” without any white headliners for the roadblocks he encountered within Hollywood. “It’s because it’s an all-black movie. There’s no major white roles in it at all,” said Lucas. The response he got Lucas told Stewart was “we don’t know how to market a movie like this.”

Now part of the reason for that prediction is that many in Hollywood feel that white Americans wont turn out for a movie with a predominantly white cast. But I ask why is it that Red Tails would only make 25 million  if  the African american Community supports it.

If badly written comedies or movies with a damn man in a dress can can make between 50 and 75 million ( sometimes more ) why can't Red Tails open north of 20 million and gross more than 50 million.

For Red Tails to be successful it takes African Americans to go support the movie and show that we will support quality movies about us. If we don't support Red Tails who will? If we fail to support movies like red tails how can we with a straight face asked to be represented better in the mainstream media? If we continue to eat and except hamburger why the hell would Hollywood ever offer us Prime Rib?

Please on January 20,2012 go support Red Tails. This is a movie about great AMERICAN heroes that all should see but that I believe all African Americans must see.

Why do we have to accept what Boxoffice.com says? The movie hasn't opened yet! I think many people will come to see it for the history alone and because Lucas fronted it. And any war buff will want to see the action of the re-enactment of those highly skilled and dedicated warriors! I think your article should have spent more time telling what the Red Tails were and did. They were incredible - fighting for a country that didn't appreciate them even as servicemen who were willing to die to prove their love of country. Now me, I am not a hawk but I will go to support it. I will do so also for the opportunity to see a bunch of some fiiine black men on the same screen! Remember A Soldier's Story, anyone?

The reason this film will not break even is because the black community doesn't care about who these heros were. The young black kids think people like Snoop Dog and Fifty Cents are heros. It's a cultural thing. If this movie was about some stupid barber shop or some rapper, they would spend a hundred bucks and watch it 10 times.
