More US citizens killed in Chicago than in Afghanistan. Does anyone care?

More US citizens killed in Chicago than in Afghanistan by George L. Cook III.

First let me say that I'm not absolving the young men committing these murders of anything. Anyone who would kill children and innocent bystanders is a disgusting and despicable human being. But this post is not about that. It's about the lack of coverage and caring of what's going on in Chicago.

Also I'm pissed off right now so if strong language or serious conversation offends you then leave this blog now.

Here are some sobering stats. In Afghanistan a known war zone 164 US troops have died in battle so far this year. In Chicago a major American city 253 people to date have been killed.

The latest of these is 7 year old Heaven Sutton. Heaven was shot to death while innocently selling lemonade and candy.

The death of Heaven as sad as it is has finally seemed to open the nations eyes to what is going on in Chicago. Before her death there was not much coverage of this disaster going on in Chicago.

In the past month I have heard more about the Chicago Bulls than I have heard or read about the murder rate in Chicago. I didn't know who the fuck Omer Asik is ( He's a Chicago Bulls player ) but his name was first in a Google search of Chicago at 8:00 PM eastern on 07/02/2012. Also on the first page were stories about the White Sox and the Cubs. There was also mention of the weather and power outages but nothing about the murder rate in Chicago.

To those who think the word disaster is extreme let me ask you this. Name another situation where 253 Americans die and the term disaster or catastrophe is not used? Name another situation where that many Americans die and it's not front page news or the lead off story in national newscast.

Is the lack of coverage and national outrage because the victims are black? I'm not trying to play the race card I'm just asking a question that has to be asked if we are going to have a serious discussion about this. If that question makes you nervous or angry then you are not ready for this discussion. Get the fuck out of here.

Does anyone think that if 253 white people died in Boston that the Navy, Army, and Marine Corp wouldn't be called in? Does anyone think that a story like that would lack national coverage. CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, and CBS would have reporters all over the story.

Why isn't that the case in Chicago? Why should it be safer for our brave men and women in Afghanistan than in Chicago? Why aren't we as Americans demanding that this shit stop. The people in Chicago can not do this alone.

Does anyone outside of Chicago even care? Do we as Americans truly care about all Americans or is it only about what goes on in our neighborhoods?

Sadly we all know what the fucking answer is.

George L. Cook III
